This study critically reviews key integration programs across Europe assessing their effectiveness in addressing skill gaps and fostering economic inclusion. By adopting a comparative policy analysis approach, this review examines residency and work permit structures, sector-specific support mechanisms, and cultural adaptation strategies. The findings highlight common challenges such as underemployment, foreign credential recognition, and cultural adaptation barriers while underscoring successful strategies, including language training, vocational upskilling, and employer incentives for hiring skilled migrants. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on two-way integration—ensuring both immigrants and host societies benefit from structured policy interventions. By identifying best practices and policy gaps, the study advocates for streamlined qualification recognition, proactive community engagement, and long-term policy flexibility to enhance labor market participation for skilled migrants. These insights serve as a foundation for evidence-based policymaking and future research on socioeconomic integration frameworks in the European context.

Presented with Kristina Eriksson-Backa in Track 30, Session I, on 16 August 2024, 09:00-10:30, Oddi O-206; the official programme also documents a discussant role.

Ahmadinia, H., & Eriksson-Backa, K.
